The only reason I would want linux on a machine would be it makes the overall price cheaper as im not having to pay for an MS license.

Charging or not, still the biggest obstacle in Linux is support. When a customer can't play a certain media type, he will most likely be clogging the Dell support lines for a solution. Which speaking of media codecs, how will they overcome the incompatibility with 64bit? A few codecs still do not have viable 64bit wrappers (will they only offer 32bit then?). Also, what will Dell do when their customers do a system upgrade that breaks their video drivers (since I'm sure they don't use open source modules)? If I were Dell, I too would be charging a hefty sum for support, specially if I have to train my employees to troubleshoot Linux problems. That, or offer "limited support" on Ubuntu machines.

Umm, Vista and XP come bundled with junk trial software. Companies like Norton pay huge sums of money in order to have their software pre-installed. With linux, you lose all that junk, and Dell loses a crapload of money.

Probably because they had all the people they needed for Vista and such and had to hire more for this expansion?

Common business practices, expansion means more employees.
