This "fix" isn't a fix at all(fact), Dell is just hoping it lasts until the systems go out of warranty.(My opinion) I've been replacing boards due to this issue for months.

I just grabbed a few shots of a Dell XPS M1330 board that was just replaced for the GPU issue. The GPU is on the left.

Oh, that's interesting.

I can confirm that my 8600M GT in my 1500 is a MXM card.

It's not Dell you should be avoiding, this problem is caused by nVidia cheaping out in the Fabs.

My laptop is almost gone too.... and it's unfortunately out of warranty...
Its 8400M G 512MB has started to show vertical lines and it's splitting the screen
in 6 to 8 parts.. It's dying and I can do nothing... It's not a Dell though,
it's a Clevo M66SRU. It's too bad.. I bought it 520 Euro, 1 year and 3 months ago.
It's bad cause I can't seem to find another one being so good at gaming.
When I asked, for repairing they told me that it will cost me around 200 Euro to
change the motherboard. But if they put the same one in it, it will most likely die again.
So it's pointless, and I'm doomed.. Does anybody have any ideas? I could probably
change the mobo myself if I had a replacement but I've been searching forever with
no results... Oh, and sorry for bringing up such an old post..!

Oven trick the PCB to resolder the GPU.

Dirty tricks if you ask me!
It's very true if you look it that way, they're just pushing back a probable death since most users won't keep their laptops cool enough and probably use them on their beds and stuff, poor GPUs.
