Default [LaptopLogic] Dell First to Provide Fix for NVIDIA's Mobile GPU Bug

http://laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=5264

Quote:
It's highly likely that many notebook manufacturers may follow suit.

Earlier this month, NVIDIA admitted problems with certain mobile GPUs used in laptops arising from a weak die/packaging material used in manufacturing. The affected GPUs are experiencing higher than expected failure rates causing video problems.

Although this problem is very critical, it's not unique to Dell but apparently they're the first ones to go public with the fix. Direct2Dell blog also points out some of the symptoms to check if your system is affected like -- multiple images, random characters on the screen, lines on the screen and even lack of any video.

Currently, Dell recommends to flash your system BIOS to the latest version which will help to "regulate" GPU temperature fluctuations. For those already facing the above mentioned issues, the BIOS update won't do any good and you'd probably have to contact Support and perhaps ask for the GPU replacement?

Although there's no official confirmation, most of the affected systems largely use GeForce 8400M GPU (or related video chipset component) so that is indirectly the cause of all problems. Find the complete list of affected Dell systems below:
  • Consumer Laptops: Inspiron 1420, XPS M1330 & XPS M1530
  • Business Notebooks: Latitude D630, Latitude D630c, Vostro 1310, Vostro 1400, Vostro 1510 & Vostro 1710
  • Mobile Workstations: Precision M2300

If you own one of the above mentioned system, make sure you update the BIOS to the latest version (links available at the source link below)

Also here with the 1500, but I've heard of users with GPU issues. I wonder why the 1500 and 1700 aren't on the list.

All this fix does is make the fan spin faster more of the time to put off the failure of the chip, Dell and other companies are hoping they can put the failure off until warranty has expired by which time its no longer their problem!

do you think if we hold out long enough (before it fails) that dell will replace our GPUs with the next-gen part xD (after their supplies of 8600m are out)

The GPUs in question are soldered to the motherboard. When they go out, you have to get the whole board replaced.

This "fix" isn't a fix at all(fact), Dell is just hoping it lasts until the systems go out of warranty.(My opinion) I've been replacing boards due to this issue for months.

I just grabbed a few shots of a Dell XPS M1330 board that was just replaced for the GPU issue. The GPU is on the left.
