A :
DX11 will run on DX10 and DX10.1 cards with DX10.1 or DX11 features disabled. DX11 features will not work on DX10/.1 cards.

B :
AMD has made a deal with Blizzard (the guys behind Diablo, World of Warcraft, and Starcraft) to include DX10.1 in many if not all of their future games. As well as optimize for AMD/ATI graphics processors.

You, sir, are wrong. I do not know how else to put it....I have tried, and tried, and tried....but no one seems to listen. DX11 takes advantage of the current hardware for it's "features"

Ok...here:

DX11 was made to work on DX10 and DX10.1 hardware. It is a Direct X upgrade, taking advantage of CURRENT hardware. End of story.

The recent news that DirectX 11 would be revealed this month caused a bit of backlash from some owners of DirectX 10 GPUs, who felt that they’ve hardly had a chance to use their hardware yet. However, Microsoft has revealed that DirectX 11 will be compatible with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as future DirectX 11-specific parts.

DirectX 10, which was first released in 2006, required DX10-specific hardware, creating a clearly-defined split between it and DX9. "We created a discontinuity; that was deliberate," Satchell said during his address, but DX11 will be compatible with DX10 hardware.
This spreading of the "ohnoes, we needs moar hardwarez" propagating panic is really based on a lack of understanding. So research...I did. Now I know. It is the beauty of the internet...knowledge at your fingertips.

A very recent article here (can't seem to find it) claimed yes it would support DX10 and DX10.1 but in fact when running those cards DX11 features would be disabled but DX10/.1 features enabled.

No. That is not what compatible means. It will implement the features available on those cards but not the ones not on those cards. Differed context switching may be implemented on older cards depending on their execution and memory features and how those affect the ability to do this.

I drew a picture to help, since my words are not working...

Older video cards supported generations of direct X

When DX10 came along, a new architecture was implemented for the new tech. The new tech will probably support several generations of Direct X in the future..

The only thing DX11 wont be able to do on DX10/10.1 hardware is use the Shader Model 5.0. Everything else is driver-based.

Wikipedia on DX11:
Quote:
Parts of the new API such as mult-threaded resource handling can be supported on DirectX 10/10.1-class hardware if GPU manufacturers implement them in their graphics drivers.
So you pop a DX11 game in to your Vista PC with DX10 compliant GPU, boot the game and...behold!
You can play in DX11 with Shader Model 4.0!

in this sponsored feature, part of Gamasutras XNA microsite, Microsofts Kevin Gee explains in-depth the new features of DirectX 11, from improved multi-threading to Shader Model 5.0 and beyond, it clearly says shader model 5.0 and beyond all directx10 cards are shader model 4.0 directx10.1 shader model 4.1, directx10.1 works on directx10 hardware but the advanced features are disabled, same thing will happen with directx11 it will work but features will be disabled until you get a directx11 hardware

if AMD get Directx11 before Nvidia i am so changing over not waiting for Nvidia to catch up, Nvidia still don't support directx10.1 !!!!!!

Basically, DX11 is all software based. Current cards have the ability to run DX 11 features. Regardless of the Hardware you have, as long as it is dx 10 compatible, it can run DX11.

DX9 cards didnt have strong enough hardware to run dx 10 correct?

DX 10 cards are strong enough to run DX 11.

My only question is, if nvidia can get dx 11 to run on a dx10 card, why not get dx 10.1 to run on a dx 10 card? Is DX10.1 hardware dependent?
