Default [H] Microsoft Improving User Account Control

Quote:
According to the Engineering Windows 7 blog there are a lot of changes being made to Microsoft’s User Account Control for Windows 7 and Ben Fathi, vice president for core OS development, says the changes will be for the better.

User Account Control (UAC) is, arguably, one of the most controversial features in Windows Vista. Why did Microsoft add all those popups to Windows? Does it actually improve security? Doesn’t everyone just click “continue”? Has anyone in Redmond heard the feedback on users and reviewers? Has anyone seen a tv commercial about this feature? In the course of working on Windows 7 we have taken a hard look at UAC – examining customer feedback, volumes of data, the software ecosystem, and Windows itself. Let’s start by looking at why UAC came to be and our approach in Vista

From the little (only a few hours every week, for the past few months. ) time I have used Windows Vista, the UAC doesn't actually seem to be THAT much of a problem. The only issue I have is the way it disturbs the ENTIRE screen, but then that's so it stands out I'd think.

Whenever I get my new laptop, I'll be keeping UAC on.

Ditto, I wish there was a power-user setting or something. Where you can modify your system files with no restrictions.

Yeah I'll disable it as well, UAC is really for the noob user who doesn't know what the hell is running on his computer and who probably gets many viruses due to poor security. Judging from past experience, UAC only slows me down, interferes with proper operation of some drivers etc...

Ironically, those same noob users would probably just click 'Continue' on every dialog that comes up cause they don't know what anything is. I mean, if they get a virus, Microsoft is an easy target to blame.

I use UAC.

I know when it is supposed to come on, and I just click it without thinking.

The scary thing is when I am just browsing the internet and it just pops up unexpectedly, warning me that something is trying to make changes to my computer.

= 95% of all users . So i don't think it's completely useless.

The main reason i end up disabling it is that once you make a fresh Vista installation, you spend the next 3 hours installing all the "default" apps you'll be needing not to mention drivers etc. etc.

During this process, you'd have to constantly keep clicking away the UAC window if you had it on... so i disable it.

After you have your PC properly set up it might actually be interesting/useful to see how often it pops up and wheter it would wtill be a pain in the neck.
