Default [LM] Linux Mint 5 x64 Edition released!

Quote:
Linux Mint is proud to announce that Linux Mint 5 Elyssa is now available on AMD64 for 64 bit processors.

In the future the x64 edition will be released at the same time as the Main and Light editions.

The purpose of the x64 edition is to offer the same desktop features as the Main edition but in a 64 bit environment. It aims to be as similar to the Main edition as possible. Due to the nature of its architecture, its package base and its origins it defers in the following ways:
  • Linux Mint x64 Edition was forked from Ubuntu Hardy as opposed to Ubuntu Edgy for the Main Edition,
  • Linux Mint x64 Edition comes with a java plugin implemented by OpenJDK, as opposed to Sun for the Main Edition.
  • Linux Mint x64 Edition comes with Xchat instead of Xchat-Gnome
  • Linux Mint x64 Edition comes with Flash 9 instead of Flash 10

More packages are available for i386 than they are for amd64 and the Main edition is also slightly more stable than its 64 bit equivalent. The Main edition only recognizes a maximum of 4GB RAM though and even on computers with less than 4GB RAM the performance gain provided by x64 over the Main edition can significantly enhance the user’s experience.

Mint is easier than Suse. I still like Suse better, though. Mint might come more polished with better support (including forum support), but it still lacks the centralization that Suse has with Yast.

I have it finally tweaked so I can use it now with all my drivers in place so I will stick with OpenSUSE for while. Mint is on my list of distros to try, though. I recently found the linux gamers thread so I am going to need to try some of those out.

I find mint to be real media friendly and accepting to whatever you want to use a computer for. I am on dial-up and did not want to have to download a bunch of things just to play an Mp3 in Ubuntu. Mint worked fine for anything I threw at it.

what Paradox said... it really owns tbh... it works out of the box and is really easy to jump to from Windows and more especially Ubuntu. being able to use Ubuntu's repositories is a HUGE boon, and i find it a lot easier to just... well, use.. best distro i have used and i will not delete the Mint partition of my drive. Click the link in my sig to go to their site.

i don't blame you for being set in SuSE. i tried it and didn't like ittoo much, but that may be because i tried a KDE version and i have not liked any KDE implementation of a distro that i have tried (Mandriva and SuSE.) maybe i ought to try it in GNOME / Fedora.

anyways, i thought this happened a while back, or was that the RC?

1 word: freedom

Why so many versions of windows? To make you pretend you're saving money on the crippled versions while bumping up the price of the full version

The reason for having so many versions of Linux is much better -_-
