yeah it sucks that they aren't including the 3800 series

It still won't go anywhere.

I want my graphics card to render just that - graphics. I don't want it to waste time doing physics calculations when it's already struggling to get 60fps.

Yeah, I wonder why they aren't also supporting the 3000 series--can there be that much of a difference between them and the 4000 series? Then again, they're not even supporting the entire 4000 series, which is interesting.

Oh, I thought I saw it was supported in 8.11 onward--guess I mis-read that. I'm wondering exactly what will be included with 8.12 though--seems like they're implying a final release of the entire pack, including things like video encoding/transcoding and other application acceleration, but I'm still skeptical...

Well, I'm sure that GPGPU tasks won't be run while you're gaming, so gaming performance won't be affected. But personally the thought of encoding a high-def movie in 12 minutes that ordinarily would take 3 hours on a CPU is so appealing. But true, you can't game at the same time... But general purpose GPU work is very promising--beyond the (mundane, in my humble opinion) idea of folding on a gpu... EDIT--Accelerated adobe app-type work is awesome--wonder what else they'll include? I'm wondering if things like complex calculations in programs like matlab and mathematica will soon be able to be accelerated in the same fashion? That would really be impressive, though I'm sure it's far on the horizon...

I wonder if this will impact folding in any way...sounds like it should.

Don't forget about GPGPU uses in protein folding, which a lot of people DO care about.

Meh, I (personally--not that everyone else has to agree) could care less if this has any impact on folding. Protein folding researchers have plenty of money/funding to build/upgrade their own supercomputing clusters. But I'm sure more support from AMD/ATI for stream processing will do nothing but help speed up jobs for those who fold.
