I read it as "Steam initiative." Even though it doesn't make sense, I almost wept.

Yes! And at least they aren't screwing over the HD4000 owners and by having this only work on the HD5000 series or something like that, which they have typically done in the past.

SO what does this actually mean?

It can encode movies & render entire PDF documents quicker. What else does this help out?

It means that there will be three GPGPU standards. OpenCL will usable across all OS's regardless of hardware and get the same results as the proprietary API's and for no fathomable reason none of the devs will use it. ATi Stream will have tremendous and varied capability if the time is put in to get it out, but everyone will use CUDA because it was first and everyone already has NVIDIA hardware.

Exactly.

Also want to mention, although the article acts like AMD is catching up... Stream has been around for a very long time. Predated CUDA by a long while.

Awesome. I'd like to see how much faster I can transcode H264 files compared to my CPU. I wonder if we'll be able to use both GPUs on the same file?

Oh, I thought I saw it was supported in 8.11 onward--guess I mis-read that. I'm wondering exactly what will be included with 8.12 though--seems like they're implying a final release of the entire pack, including things like video encoding/transcoding and other application acceleration, but I'm still skeptical...
Extremely BIG difference.

4000 vs 3000 has 2 big changes in the shaders.

1. Implementation of arbitary read/writes to other thread data (should help the majority of GPGPU apps a lot)
2. 5 times more bitshift operations (useful in transcoding)

This and the movie encoding - I completely forgot about. (I also fold on my card)

It definitely does have its uses, gaming however, is NOT one of them.
