Default [Reuters] EA posts loss causing delay in 3 games

"Electronic Arts sees loss as it delays 3 games
Tue Feb 3, 2009 10:31pm GMT Franklin Paul

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc posted weaker-than-expected results and said it would delay the release of several games, causing it to forecast a loss for the current fiscal year."

"He said EA expected to develop 10 to 20 percent fewer game titles in fiscal 2010, which begins in April, than in the current fiscal year.

EA said it would delay the release of "Sims 3," "Godfather 2" and "Dragon Age" to fiscal 2010 from fiscal 2009, and that it would narrow its product portfolio and cut other variable costs."

Sims3 delayed to at least April....

In light of a $641 million dollar loss, EA announced that is plans to shut down 12 different facilities and lay off 11 percent of its workforce. Electronic Arts reported a third quarter loss of $641 million -- exponentially wider than its $33 million loss in the same period last year.
Most of the loss, the publisher says, is attributable to various business charges. EA's revenue actually increased about 10 percent year over year to $1.65 billion, plus $88 million in deferred revenue from online games -- but the gains still did not meet analysts' expectations.

The widening losses are prompting EA to expand its restructuring efforts slightly, however. With the company's results announcement today, EA said it now plans to lay off 11 percent of its workforce, or 1,100 employees, and to close 12 of its facilities
Cause its EA...they don't know realise how to sell games. Its only now they are realising.
1100 workers ouch!

Oh boy the backlash on the BioWare forums over Dragon Age's delay is HUGE. I'm quite pissed as well.

They're delaying it so that the PC release can coincide with the console release instead of the PC version coming a few months earlier.

Gee thanks consoles/EA.

They're trying to confuse the pirates by giving them too many platforms at the same time upon which to pirate.
