But where they cross a big line into potential anti-competition territory is when they explicity prohibit and actively prevent you from acquiring, installing, and using software they do not "approve of" through other channels. For the industrious among you who jailbreak yiur iPhone to get around that ridiculous restriction, Apple brands you a pirate/criminal and takes action to lock you up again with the next software update.

Apple is about as wrong as can be on this issue, and I can't see how they won't be forced to open up eventually. Their business model depends on the app store, so of course they will fight it to the end.
QFT.. Don't like it don't buy an iPhone. Or Jailbreak your phone to run those unapproved 3rd party apps and/or run a non-apple OS. Or write your own apps. iPhone SDKs are available.

And I believe that the Apple argument about using unapproved apps is that they might be buggy/incompatible and lead to a bad user experience, and then the dissatisfied user buys another product next time. (which is what I did when the iPod died)

The funny thing though is the double standard that applies here. If Apple does it, it's their right. However it Microsoft were to do it, we wouldn't be having this argument, because this thread would already be 8 pages long and completely filled with hate

That's quite a bit different. You don't need to have an app approved to release it for Mac OS X.
