Just make sure if you're using the free version to disable the ads that pop up when it updates.

To do so...
go to the avira folder and find the program called avnotify.exe
-right click it
-properties
-security
-remove its security rights to "read and execute"

No more popups.
Thanks, rep+
The adds were the only reason Avira didn't stick on any of my rigs despite using less resources than Avast.

Anyhow, I recommend Avira with this tweak, or Avast if you have a rig powerful enough not to care about some more CPU cycles.

EDIT: Nevermind about Avast, looks like it's not all it once was.

I tried Norton 09...it doesn't seem so bad like the older versions. Only uses 6MB of RAM. Not sure how good it's detection is, as I've never got a positive with any AV program I've used, but it's sure easy on the resources.

How much RAM does avira use normally?

+1 for Avira here. I have used nearly every other Av out and must say nothing comes close to Avira, especially when you consider it is free. Not only does it have a really small footprint but I have not run it for about 5 months because if there is something lurking it will detect it automatically with out intervention. Even just browsing the web, if the page is dodgy it will detect it and give you the option of what to do with it.

Excellent AV.

After reading the article more thoroughly (actually reading the article) I find it very flimsy. I am amazed to find Norton and McAffee among the top dogs, I always found them slow and very very resource needy. The interface was pretty, but their performance was really lacking... and now they're on top. Just weird imho.

Avast is a system hog? All these years I've been using it and didn't notice...
My rig isn't beastly or anything. Well, I hope that Avira will give me a little more speed.

And rep for the "no popup" thing.

How does NAV 2009 differ from Symantec AntiVirus Corportate Edition 10?

Avira is really good, been using it for a few years after my (lol) English teacher told me about it - was just using AVG before that.
