for most low quality applications (ipod, mp3 players in general, low quality audio systems) mp3 is fine.
Personally, I use mp3s on my phone because it doesn't have the fidelity for me to notice the difference. As far as flac is concerned I like to have the original copy to listen to at home and to use for proper edits.
I stick to my statement that this is a small step in hopefully the right direction.

Agreed, and most people don't understand that even though you do not hear some of the frequencies, music is more than just the notes and sounds that are played but the way those sounds interact with each other and also what you don't hear, the valleys not just the peaks. When you start cutting off the tops of the peaks then you change the size of the valleys and the way the other peaks are interacting and it changes the sound. In most consumer cases it's not that big of a deal but in editing or in HiFi situations it is a really big deal. CD's are guilty of this, let alone crappy MP3's, and that doesn't even include the "loudness wars" where the damn engineers and producers are muffing up the masters before it even gets to a lower fidelity medium.
