This fine is for the thousands of times those songs were seeded out to others, not the 1 time they were downloaded.

speaking out about a gross injustice in no way means your supporting pirates or their actions. I find it amusing how when someone speaks out about something like this on these forums the common response is people shoving their heads up their own **S and start acting all high and mighty like they have never down a bad thing in their lives, live perfectly inline with the law, and their final opinion is god.

She's lucky she didn't get hit with a larger fine. The Copyright Act defines the boundaries for fines for infringement that range from $750 to $30,000 per work (song in this case). Willful infringement (such as here) raises the ceiling to $150,000 per work. And it doesn't really matter that she shared the songs, damages are only per work infringed (24 in this case). Most likely the damages will be reduced later, or they'll settle. The plaintiffs have made their point and probably don't want to seem like "the bad guys" and generate negative publicity by trying to collect that much from a woman in her situation.

Anybody who does a serious study into the effects of music sharing will tell you that with the exception of the garbage on MTV, most bands have benefited from the massive exposure. My own government recognizes this, hence my protected status. Its not like the bands receive any significant profit anyways. This is all about the recording industry fighting back against digital downloads in general. Bands make their money from touring and selling swag, so if piracy means the difference between playing at a club and selling out a 20,000 seat arena why the hell should they care?

apparently she had added and shared 1700 songs on KazZaa or something of that sort but to make it easier they only sued for 24 songs. Even there "settlement" for $3,500 is to much.. although 1700 songs at $1.99 it about that, but now days they are 99 cents online. I think they should fine her AT MOST $1,700 dollars. and that is it.
How terrible. That's why you shouldn't share or DL without Peer Guardian or the new utorrent has an ipfilter. (I'm not saying it's RIGHT to pirate either) But What a shame. I feel bad for her. I hope she DOESN'T pay a penny. I'd file bankruptcy if I couldn't settle it.

Seriously though, how does this fine make sense to anyone? She should pay 5 times the price of the song for every time it's downloaded from her computer during P2P usage. No more. How do they get away with this?!
