Also, don't include flash or javascript support in the browser by default, so they will feel compelled to download a new operating system.

Easy

First send an FTP request for a file with a list of critical updates. Then the computer examines the file against what it has on it. It then builds a list of files it will need. Finally it sends another FTP request for those files and places them in a folder to wait for the update mechanism to grab them.

OMG that was hard you guys.

I don't understand how MS could've been found guility of a browser monopoly. They make windows, they can put whatever they want into it. Why don't these government agencies crack down on Apple for including safari in their OS? Or any linux distro for including firefox? The fact that they keep losing these lawsuits is ridiculous. Its like telling Honda they have to put Ford seats in their cars.

90% of the world computers run on Windows and that the average computer user will use the software there computer/OS comes with. Combine that with the fact that IE is integrated into Windows and can not be removed. Means MS more or less decides what the "standard" is and what most people will use.

That's also the reason Apple and Lunix are not getting sued. Only 10% of the computers in the world run on there OS.

As for everyone wondering how the EU can be this stupid. Go ask those kids that sued McDonalds because they where fat. Stupidity is a global disease that effects people on both sides of the Atlantic. So stop the "EU are idiots" remarks, it's getting old.

As for me, I've been trying to get rid of IE for a long time now. Lets hope that this will make software defelopers support something other then IE, for programs like, for example Steam.

Again its peoples choice in the end what they choose to buy and use, the fact that having a browser integrated into the OS is pretty much essential now for internet access out of the box. Microsoft makes Windows, internet explorer is a part of Windows. I've also never understood this monopoly crap either. How can you outlaw a monopoly in a capitalist society? That essentially goes against capitalism, because if you make a product that 90% of the world chooses to use and reap tons of profit as a result is essentially the ultimate goal of any entity in a capitalist society. MS has technically won capitalism and I guess thats the reason they are being punished, oh the irony.

Why dont Lamborghini buyers have the option to pick a Ferrari engine? I mean, it's not fair that the Lambo is bundled with their own high performance engine!

Lamborghini don't have a monopoly on the car market, not even the high-performance car market...

Neither of them has a monopoly. Also, for the record, several Linux distros come with alternative browser (Fedora and IIRC openSUSE both came with FF as well as Konqueror, and installing others is a matter of few mouse clicks).

It's all about MS having near-monopoly.

The way I see it the way that people use computers has changed drastically over the years. The average home computer probably gets used to browse the internet more than any other task. With "cloud computing" on the rise that trend is likely to increase. With that in mind it only seems logical that an internet browser be included with an OS. I'm not really sure why the EU got its' feathers ruffled over this.

Why doesn't the EU have a problem with Windows Media Player, Windows DVD Maker, or even the calculator program being bundled with windows? There are competing programs for all of those as well.

One solution would be for MS to offer two versions of Windows to Europe. One with no browser, and another with a browser included for people that don't like to mail-order their software. Surely the EU isn't against letting people decide for themselves. I would hope.
