Spammers have been using the recent death of Michael Jackson to spread malware.

They do it by disguising their emails like official Mexico CNN articles about the recent death of the Pop King with links that would normally link to a CNN video or source. Instead, the links direct the reader to a malware site where it asks the reader to install a flash plugin in order to view the video. The site's address is also disguised to look somewhat official and the careless might not realize what is currently happening because regardless of whichever 3 buttons you press (OK, cancel, or continue) will result in the download of malware.

The malware is called BKDR_IRCBOT.BW. It connects to an IRC server and a channel. A remote user then can send commands through the IRC to the host computer.

Trend Micro claims they have already updated their databases to protect against this malware.

So put quite simply - be weary of the email you're opening especially if its in another language. Nothing particularly new, but it is just a reminder that even the most official looking email and links can lead to some serious problems even if you're protected.
We just hope that we won't be getting any Billy Mays mail next.
