in france if you get caught pirating you get a few warnings then an internet ban!!!! alot of people have been getting warnings because their wifi got hacked and used to download, i dont know if they are still doing that but that is the only thing that will stop those dirty pirates, everyway has side effects tho

No, WEP takes at least at least minimal effort. Though I know quite a few people that "borrowed" others wirelless internet because they had no password and the price was in their range. Which was $0. Got to love college.

I agree that this is a bad precedent, but why is it always the few who get the letters that did nothing when we hardly ever hear of all the others that, guilty or no, didn't claim innocence. It is like all other news, people are so willing to jump all over the few mistakes without any regard for the vast majority on the other side. If this was such a huge problem, why did so few claim foul (20 out of 6000) if it was that bad?

I guess I just wish there were a better way to track and prosecute the violators. the other big issue is that it is a world wide web without world wide laws etc. If they could unify the system so that everyone had to follow the same rules, it would be much easier.


I think the root of the issue is that, for the most part, the people making and enforcing the laws do not have the understanding or the technical background to understand how filesharing and PC's in general operate. It would be like me telling someone how to do brain surgery and then getting upset when it doesn't go smoothly.



Not one member of my family (6 households) even knew to ask the guy installing their routers/networks to secure them. Back to my previous point, the average PC user is as ignorant as everyone else.

i did a little experiment, got one of these wep cracking programs that are really unfriendly to use, tried to crack my router i gave up because it took so long and was boring, that was only a 32bit key but the router has to be in pairing mode for anything to connect. not sure if there is a way around it but i couldnt find one. looked at my niehbours new router and it turns out the name of it is the password lol. that was real hard

Yeah, but you can't just seemingly pluck names out of a phonebook. Imagine the audacity of having to defend yourself randomly from filesharing charges? If you have a PC and they try to take you to court, your defense won't be as good as an old couple charged with downloading Race 07

Agreed, there are probably more than 20 out of that 6000 but they were afraid of going to court and loosing so they settled. That's how the RIAA and MPAA works, why not these guys too? Even if it only 20 that's 20 too many. If you were driving down the road and a cop pulled you over randomly and gave you a speeding ticket even though you know you were going the speed limit would you find that acceptable? Now most of you would say you'd fight it in court, as you should for that, but what if you lost in traffic court and instead of just having to pay the original ticket you had to pay 10-1000 TIMES as much? Would you still be willing to take your chances?
