Xubuntu or Dam small linux for netbooks.

I tried Ubuntu netbook remix and it was sluggish as unfortunately ubuntu is getting bloated slowly.

That said this is all based on performance of my netbook with 900mhz so if it has a core2 then netbook remix would probably be better.

Hrm,

I'm curious about it. I have an asus 3eee with 2gigs of ram on an atom processor. Nice little thing. Great battery life. I've used netbuntu and xp on it. I kept xp simply because it had better battery life. If Win7 is truly better that'd be great. But really, all I care about is how well it uses the battery and how well it handles the web. Honestly, you don't see your OS on a netbook unless you're just staring at the desk top. You should be only seeing an open browser and whatever else you have rumbling on the thing.

Very best,

Personally, I'd leave Windows to more powerful machines alltogether. Ubuntu will run quite happily on netbooks, and anyone who can use Windows can use Ubuntu, so it's all good

Windows 7 Starter version is supposedly optimized for netbooks, so I'd like to see a test of that versus Windows XP.

Of course, there's always Ubuntu for Netbooks.

running W7 on a 5 year old IBM r51 w/ 1.5 ghz pentium M and 512mb ram and in all honestly, it's about the same speed as the XP pro SP3 install I had on it before the hard drive died.

If I had tried vista instead, it would've been horrible (other laptop is a sempron 3800+ w/ 512mb ram that had vista installed when the GF won it.) It was bad times.

Since today's netbook specs are more in line with computers from the Windows XP era, I'd assume that XP would be best suited for underpowered machines.

What about OSX? Haven't seen that mentioned yet...

I have used both OS X and Windows 7 on a Dell Mini 9, and due to no 'real' Atom drivers existing for OS X, battery life is around 70% of what I get in Windows 7 in similar usage situations.

Only because of poor driver optimization. If Linux gains more support people will make better drivers.
The day that Linux has everything we need will be the day that Linux cost's money.

Ubuntu.

If they could get 7 to fit on the SSD, I would go with it.

If it has a hard drive it is NOT a Netbook IMHO.
