Looks like a very large stick to me.
No, not once did they tell them to remove IE from Windows 7. Read again, n00b.

Dude - they forced them to remove IE8. They may not have said it directly, but that is EXACTLY what they wanted MS to do. There is no "oh, but they didn't say it", basically it was either that or no way.
You tell us what MS could've done.

As has been previously reported, Microsoft is removing Internet Explorer 8 when it releases Windows 7 in Europe. Microsoft claims that pressure from the European Union has placed the company in a position that their choices were limited so they have opted to remove IE8 from Windows 7

In other words, they really had no choice and the most painless way of appeasing them was to remove IE8, which is exactly what they wanted.

MS should include Firefox or Chrome as an alternative.

My opinion, is that it is disturbing that the EU thinks that Microsoft should offer other companies' software in place of their own during their own OS installation. I don't see the EU complaining about Safari with OSX, just because Apple holds a smaller market share doesn't mean they should get to play by different rules. Great News for us in Europe, we pay upgrade prices and get the full install disk
I couldn't care less, if windows 7 comes with, with out, or a bundled disk with various internet browsers on it.
Microsoft were found guilty in the anti-trust case, you all need to get over it.

"The European Commission will proceed with its antitrust case against Microsoft regardless of Microsoft's decision to strip IE from Windows 7 in Europe. Europe's top antitrust regulator said the EC would draw up a remedy that allows computer users 'genuine consumer choice,' noting that stripping out IE from Windows 'may potentially be positive,' but 'rather than more choice, Microsoft seems to have chosen to provide less.' Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera, whose complaint to the European Commission at the end of 2007 sparked the initial antitrust investigation, said Microsoft is 'trying to set the remedy itself by stripping out IE. ... Now that Microsoft has acknowledged it has been breaking the law by bundling IE into Windows, the Commission must push ahead with an effective remedy,' he said."

Dude you could not be more wrong. The European Commission have specifically stated that they did not ask, or imply Microsoft should remove IE8. In fact, they have gone as far as saying they should reconsider their decision to remove it form European versions.

[Source]

Quote:
The European Commission notes with interest Microsoft’s announcement of its plans for Windows 7, and in particular of the apparent separation of Internet Explorer (IE) from Windows in the EEA. The Commission will shortly decide in the pending browser tying antitrust case whether or not Microsoft’s conduct from 1996 to date has been abusive and, if so, what remedy would be necessary to create genuine consumer choice and address the anticompetitive effects of Microsoft’s long-standing conduct. In terms of potential remedies if the Commission were to find that Microsoft had committed an abuse, the Commission has suggested that consumers should be offered a choice of browser, not that Windows should be supplied without a browser at all.

Yeah, oddly enough, I'm using Firefox and I have done since 2004.

I'm stating facts. The EC did not tell Microsoft to remove IE8 from Windows 7 and Microsoft had already decided to remove IE8 before the decision (which, hasn't even been decided, Microsoft are acting on their own)

People have no right to be angry at the EU. The EU hasn't forced MS to remove IE8 from Windows, but suggested they give people a choice. Microsoft decided to give the EC the finger and take IE out. Rather than offer a CD with multiple browsers, they're leaving it to OEM's and retail outlets to offer browsers with a consumers purchase. Which in itself may end up foul of the EC and the courts decision and land them in more trouble for being awkward as it still doesn't give the consumer a choice.

It seems to me like it's mainly American bloggers and posters jumping the gun and defending Microsoft. If you actually read some official sources you'll understand what's going on.

Oh and for god sake, I'm getting tired of seeing this Apple Safari silly arguement being told like it actually carries some weight. Apple sells computers heavly limited to their own brands of software, that's the whole point and support of an Apple product. But, more to the point. Safari is not built in and integrated into Apple's OS, needlessly. It is removable and will not hinder the operating system in any way. Other web browsers have the same advantages as Apples Safari browser. Does Firefox have Active X controls? How about easy WMP integration? Hell, how about easy Windows integration? At least Safari follows correct web consortium standards! Anyone who has written HTML with DIV tags and CSS in the last X number of years should sufficiantly hate Internet Explorer.

So let's recap:
  • MS had decided to remove IE8 before the EC reached a decision
  • The EC did not say that MS had to remove IE, at all. I challenge ANYONe to find me some CONCRETE proof of this.
  • MS are still in foul of the law by removing the choice all together. The whole point was people were supposed to have a choice, and instead of offering people a choice, MS have removed it entirely.
  • You all need to look at MS and start blaming them and whinging about them. Get the hell off the EU's back for doing the right thing. Were it not for EC pressure, the American versions would still have IE locked in there and not removable at all.

I still find it amusing that Bill Gates got away with lying to congress stating Internet Exploder could not be removed from windows.

We knew he was lying under oath back then.

Funny thing is IE8 has been the only recent version of the browser that I find worth using, if they were taking out 6 or 7 everyone would support it since they were just garbage compared to firefox and had more holes than 50 cent.
