I've tried it. And the things I want to do with it make it really slow, and hard to code. It is not a user friendly OS, that is the big problem with it.

Anything simple, works really nice. Anything advance, in order to make it a more enjoyable experience then Windows, you'll have to know your coding skills really good.

This is great that Dell is saying this. Stops the biased views on things. : D

not at all. You just need to learn to read, be patient and ask questions. I am using Arch and DWM (considered an 'elitist WM') and I can't program at all. Sure you run into problems, but the fun is figuring out how to fix it

I personally found Linux to be a hell lot more user friendly than windows. Its easy to go under the hood and mess with stuff in Linux while in windows this is about as hard as licking your nostrils clean with your own tongue.

Its the reason I use Linux. It places no restrictions on what you can do with it and every thing inside it is well documented. And most importantly, its really easy to develop applications for Linux and make your own modifications since there is a lot of help available online for it.

Agreed! Get some reading in and learn how to use a terminal window and see the light. I've got Fedora 11 on another machine and absolutely love it.

I don't remember that many Linux netbooks coming back at work (Best Buy). We do have lots of perfectly fine Mac's coming back though. People can't stand the fact most of their programs they have used for years aren't usable without VMware or Bootcamp. They look at it like this. Why buy a Mac to get away from Windows when you have to pretty much run windows on the Mac anyway to get most of the programs out there to work? But that's another story. Come to think of it we don;t have many netbooks being returned period unless they are defective.

the number of Linux returns are approximately the same as those for Windows netbooks.
Yeah but there are probably way more Windows netbooks sold than Linux.

They are talking about percentages of returns.

I think that linux is GREAT for servers, but for the average user on desktop, not so much. Linux is more for the geeky type who has a thirst for knowledge. If setup properly for somebody, it works well for basic user needs (throw on firefox and OOo on there, it will probably do most of their needs). Gaming has been a sad joke for a long time w/ Linux... hard to say what direction that will go in... Rage is hopeful, but DX11 is around the corner... who knows. Linux has its place, but its simply not for everybody.

My netbook came w/ some hacked up linux (cant remember the name of is) and it was very restricted. I put Ubuntu on it and was very impressed, but some of the features on the laptop would not work properly. I tried Suse 10 and had nothing but issues. Suse 11 was no different. XP works great, outside of the solid state drive doesn't work with XP very well and caused a ton of stuttering issues... but the hardware all worked perfect w/ the drivers and what not. Ill probably go back to Ubuntu as it seems there has been some progress made to get it going.

ON TOPIC: Dell has some major balls for this one. Its good to see the little guy (linux) be stood up for by a major player (Dell) against the big ogre (MS). Linux on the netbooks has a lot of potential, as long as they keep the pricing fair.

Maybe next they'll tell Intel where to stick it

I only use Linux to hack things I can't get past on Windows, not like black hat hacking, but hacking stuff for customers or getting back data through linux when Windows is totall shot. Linux is good for servers and stuff, but it seems really comlpicated to set up because it's not very self-explanatory its a lot of command line and unpacking tar.gz files. Setting up an internal business network on Linux would be a nightmare for me, but I could do it on Windows very quickly. I think most businesses don't run linux cause the average user can barely even turn off their services that are unneccessary, so command line is completely foreign to them.

Sorry, what?

If you are running a modern distro desgined for the home user (Ubuntu et al), you should never need to touch the command line.

Hell, if you are installing from source tarballs, you are doing it wrong. Every distro has a package manager, and you should be using that.
