I don't see the point of using Linux now when Windows 7 is pretty much faster and better for battery life on a netbook.

For me, Linux has always been a better low power distro. The only things I can down on is first party driver support, but hopefully my issues with the intel drivers will be fixed in 9.10. And the issue I"m having is a very minor one. So it's not even that important. But I can still haul more battery life out of Ubuntu linux than I can Windows 7, and I am far more productive with the under powered CPU, unlike Windows which struggles to open things with a 1.4ghz dual core, Linux is just as snappy about opening my apps on my Timeline as it is my Desktop.

But see Linux isn't a pick and go OS. Windows is much easier to use than linux. Wanna run an installer? Double click on the installer and just keep pressing next.
I was expecting something similar in linux but I was reading one thing said I had to use command line, I was like F' that cause I just wanted to try to install something real quick. Another thing said I had to use the package manager. So I looked all over and I saw synaptics package manager. Being that I know synaptics makes trackpads and mice for laptops I figured that had nothing to do with installing software. Not so cut and dry until I actually had to go online and read page after page until I got to one in plain English.

If you go into Ubuntu Linux expecting to use Windows you are doing it wrong.
On the other hand, if you want a light weight OS that runs like Windows but is free, and very compatible. ReactOS And still, Linux has never been that hard to use, I gave linux over to my 13 year old little brother and he picked it up almost instantly.

I've said this before and ill say it again. People are F'n idiots. I deal with them on a daily basis. These people refer to office as windows. So you guys on OCN need to get out of this mindset that it's easy cause it isn't. I have no way of learning terminal but on my own. Tha means I have to spend hours (not minutes) teaching my self the commands syntax and what not. Hell sometimes I have trouble with syntax in CMD even though I type it the way I'm told to. So no Linux/Ubuntu is not easy and stop thinking it is. Linux is not a pick up and do what you normally would do OS and it never will be until someone makes it in to one. No one cares if it was easy for you. To me rocket science is easy(not really) and I understand the ins and out of it. But that doesn't mean here figure out how much propulsion it would take to get to the moon if I just gave you the equations and an example problem. Os is like math. Unless you have someone to teach to you and guide you, you will not learn it. There are exceptions where you can learn it on your own but that is far in between

That said, people get by with what they have to know to do what they do. They could easily learn to use Linux, but the thing is, they already know how to use windows, and slight differences confuse them. Linux isn't hard. It's just not windows.

Agreed that Linux isn't exactly "easy".

This drives me crazy... I fix people's computers for them all the time and when I am talking about "reinstalling windows" for them they always think I'm talking about reinstalling office... most people (and most people indeed are idiots) have no idea what an operating system even is, and have no concept of what windows is at all.

It really bugs me when people use incorrect terms repeatedly. It's annoying as it makes things less clear. I hate it when people talk about 'MP3s' referring to portable music players, and 'my internet'. It is no wonder everyone is so clueless when it comes to tech when they get fed incorrect terminology.

Exactly, though, if you install a Linux OS in OEM mode (Ubuntu for example since it's easy, and has it there) then most people don't have a problem understanding, or working anything out.
More so because of programs like FireFox that they are all used to, and OpenOffice having a similar layout to Office 2003. If you give them the best Linux/Windows experience you can, often enough, it's not a problem. And anyone I've done that for (which has been plenty of people) I have never once gotten a complaint, or had them ask to put Windows back on. Most of the time, the only thing some people have run into an issue with is a Music player, as they want something either alot like Windows Media Player or iTunes. For iTunes it's easy, I supplement in Songbird and all is well. For WMP it's a little harder, but most of the time, I usually try to run a few programs for them in the shop to see what they prefer.
