Default [register] Dell: Linux v Windows netbook returns a 'non-issue'

Quote:
Speaking at OpenSource World, a Dell executive deflated Microsoft's enthusiasm for making a case out of the number of Linux netbooks returned by unhappy customers.

Todd Finch, Dell senior product marketing manager, said the number of Linux returns are approximately the same as those for Windows netbooks. He categorized the matter of returns as a "non-issue".

"They are making something of nothing," he said of Microsoft's claims. Finch appeared to be referring to Dell's own netbook sales.

Dell sells three machines running the Ubuntu Linux distro: the Atom-based Mini 10v, which can be classed as a netbook, plus the Inspiron 15n and XPS M1330n that run Core 2 Duo chips.

Interesting. I'd have expected Dell to sit back and not comment.

Dell has been rather supportive of Ubuntu as of late. Which is really good.

Though, I laugh at Microsoft trying to attack linux because Ubuntu is making headroom in the Microsoft monopoly.

One thing i dont get is this. And please correct me if im wrong. Those who love linux want to see more developer support. But it seems to me that a lot of people want this not necessarily for what linux offers but becuase its all free.

Now i would think if it got decent market share and devolopers developed for it they would charge for their software if not they wouldnt really bother either a) giving it their all and proper support or b) even developing at all or at nearly the same pace as for windows.

Now on topic, this does not suprise me at all, any company would try and spin news like this in their favor. Microsoft just got called out this time which happens. I personally dont see microsoft as a giant evil monopoly like others but its nice to see a company try and spin something and have it back fire

I despise Linux just out of personal preference, but it's good to see Dell standing up for it. It doesn't suit my needs, but it would service the needs for a greater number people if it just becomes a little more recognized by the "average" person. I'd like to say this a good step, but I have a feeling the kind of people reading articles about Dell sticking up for Linux are the ones who already have a good idea of merits of Windows alternatives.

Have you even tried fixing it?
Or tried a different distro (may I recommend Fedora)?
