I went to the Windows Server 2008 launch event last year in LA at Staples Center. It also covered Visual Studio 2008 and SQL 2008. I learned about it from this thread.

It was well organized and put together. The format of the Server event I went to had an opening keynote with some interesting guest speakers, then everyone moved on to the individual sessions. The sessions were more targeted to a specific audience and some of them were pretty interesting. It was mostly to show off the new technology rather than to instruct how to do something. If you wanted to play with the new software, you could go to one of several labs where they had 50-100 computers set up with step-by-step tutorials for various things. And they also had a vendor pavilion with Microsoft partners like Dell, HP, AMD, Cisco, Infragistics and other companies of all sizes.

Everything was pretty high-level and was mostly geared for IT managers, CIOs, developers, and developer managers to get excited about the new products. It was a fun event and I think I'll try to go to this one too.

As far as swag goes, I got a full version copy of Vista Ultimate, evaluation versions of SQL 2008, VS 2008, and Server 2008, a copy of the Windows Mobile SDK, a messenger bag (kinda cheap-o but it's what held all the goodies), and this huge hardback "Heroes Happen {Here}" book which was basically a photo album of random IT/developers from random companies who used Microsoft products.

For those of you who aren't in the developer/IT arena, you can still go. It's not an event really geared for you, but I don't think they'll turn you away. However, you may need to be 18 in order to sign up.

So even if I'm not an IT Professional, I can attend? Will they check my ID or some proof that I must be an IT Pro?

How about you guys read the Source?

It specifically states that you will need to show form of ID when you arrive.

This has also been answered by me and numerous others in this thread.

Come on guys, if you're interested at all, at least read the source.

You DO NOT have to be in the IT Profession. It specifically asks you what profession you are in. There is an option for "Other".

They will not turn you away for not being specifically in the IT field.

Sorry about that... I read some post by others stating they're going and they are not IT pro, so I just want to confirm.

For the nine millionth time...NO.
You DO NOT have to be an IT Professional to attend the event. However that means you will also have to be dishonest when registering for the event.

The only identification you need to present when you get there is a valid photo ID and a printed copy of the confirmation email they send you after registration.

*NOTICE*
If you use outlook make sure to allow images in the confirmation email. They attach a barcode at the bottom of the email that I can only assume will be scanned at the event.
