I know how you feel because it's even worse for me. I tried folding with my 4650. It got hot and loud but not much else happened. Took like 2.5 days to finish 1 wu.

I think I can fold faster than my 4890s . I left them on all night long and they were so slow . I compared with NVIDIA cards that are under my setup, and they gave me a lovely ass whooping. Hope the new client supports every ATI feature including CFX .

That's why I left Folding@home.. lack of equity between the brands. Now that my 4870 is blowing away Milkyway@home WU's...it's a non-issue for me.

I agree - Open CL will be huge..

One thing I do foresee is Stanford completely losing ATI people over to BOINC if they beat them to equity..those 5800's will go underused and inefficient with current Stanford/F@H programming -

but they stand the benefit and give pause to the CUDA users over on BOINC...

For both clients - where we all win is clearly from the hardware vendors perspective - they're finally starting to realise that they should build these things with more than gaming in mind - both brands seem to be fully behind solid development efforts in the distributed computing area.

So in a year from now, I think our discussion would be very different than today..

the 300 series from NVidia will be an interesting variable into this discussion..

ONe thing to be noted... when I asked the SETI people why they haven't deployed a test version of an ATI client - they basically said that Nvidia dropped the Cuda client on them originally...so clearly NVidia made that a development priority - and now all their customers benefitted... Folding code was probably helped in great part by Nvidia too..

If only ATI would think the same way...

I don't necessarily think that a good chunk of the ATI folders are going to leave F@H in favour of BOINC, I just think that BOINC will pick up users that are new to Distributed Compuing that have ATI graphics mainly due to the fact that most of the ATI users that currently do not use Folding@Home have a card that is too slow to make any real impact on Folding@Home where as boinc has numerous projects and even something like a 4670 can make quite a splash in the rankings.

Totally agreed for the most part - in short I was saying that I imagine people will eventually stick with the client that is better optimized for their brand video card...

For example, you download the CCC drivers - and you always have the option to install F@H.. which is great, and ATI prmotes it as the example of "scientific computing" on all it's websites... but as we all know, Nvidia cards make ATI's look foolish when folding.(so why wouldn't ATI really put more effort forth to open it up and get participation from other projects). Basically I saw it as them giving up, for the time being when they should have been working on making that client run better (in addition to the above suggestion)

So both clients should continue the hard work making them better, and NVidia and ATI should continue to promote the underlying software to make that a reality.

If one was drastically better than the other....then why wouldn't you move to suit your brand..

That's the whole point, a 4670 with 320 stream threads should be able to put forth a good effort...I mean, it's 40% of my 4870...but it's still not a weak card...

PPD per watt used....efficiency - in all clients, that's all I'm driving for..the fact that Stanford is moving in an open platform direction is certainly great news for all of us....

On a side note - I wish OCN had a master distributed computing thread - of which Folding was a sub-topic..instead of having no distributed computing master thread and Folding being the main topic (ENTERPRISE - any good word into admins would be appreciated thanks)....

yeah, it would be nice to get more PPD from my 4870 than my almost 2 year old 8800 GTS
