If CUDA is indeed more efficient than OpenCL (could you provide a link to that info?), then it sounds to me like OpenCL needs more work. I disagree that Stanford should be forced to continue working with proprietary solutions.

Well I can't confirm that OpenCL < CUDA in terms of efficiency (or vice versa), I have read that Nvidia cards would notice a performance drop with the GPU3 client. Whether if this translates into CUDA being more efficient than OpenCL is an opinion entirely based on the reader.

According to those blog posts there will be a small drop in perf but its to do with them putting stability first at this point with the client rather than outright speed, then they will try and remedy that during the later dev stages

In particular, it should be much more stable than the previous FAH GPU MD cores. However, this stability does come at a mild cost in performance. We will address this at the benchmarking stage, since all core 15 (GPU3) projects will start fresh, not continuing existing projects.
But honestly As they get more familiar with the new code, and more familiar with OpenCL they will be able to eke out more perf as you'd expect

And either way this will provide a massive boost for anyone with an ATI card, so even dropping say 5-10% on performance for the sake of stability from a Nvidia card it would be more than made up for by those using it on ATI cards now that its power should finally be harnessed

So all in all its a very positive gain IMO overall, at least for those not obssessed with their PPD or are upset at the prospect of Nvidia potentially losing its claim to fame as THE folding card to own, in that case we will still see people ***** and moan about it

but really folding is all about finding the cure and we should all want everyone out there willing to help to be able to use 100% of the power they are donating rather than being screwed from having a bad client no matter what card you are using, its all about the science people not our card loyalties

The biggest benefit I see is that I could run both Nvidia and ATi cards in a single folding rig, running GPU3 clients. This means, as a folder, you just buy whatever is priced best, rather than being forced to buy Nvidia to get the most PPD.

Cool cool. Been waiting for this for a while. I think Nvidia GPU will still fold better in most cases, but at least a 4890 OC'ed may finally get more then a 8800gt.

Is there any reason somebody could not continue to use the current gpu core after the new one is released? Thinking that if possible this would prevent any loss of ppd for nvidia users.

Imho i think that once this is out, OCN could overtake most other teams in terms of shear folding power.

For sure. The lack of a good ATi client is the one thing preventing some Overclockers here on jumping onto the project (myself included)
