I'm used to dealing with issues there from a programming stand point but I was think that this might not be able to deal with multi-cpu shared memory situations if the problem is being cause by the connection of one of the cpus to the memory controller. I could just have the picture of how that works wrong in my head though.

Shared memory as in an onboard videocard grabbing memory from your regular memory? In that case memtest will still find errors outside the OS.
I completely agree that you should test memory outside the OS.
