So... are they going to review every iPhone app? Good luck with that.

Feels like the US is the only westernized country left that hasn't gone nuts with censors and regulation... but I'm afraid that's going to change at some point...

They aren't banned, they just put stricter limits on how powerful lasers people are allowed to own without a licence (I think the limit was 100 mW).

And I think the ban was simply due to the fact that firstly, this "one guy" could have crashed planes and secondly, and secondly, when one guy figures a way to be mischievous and mess with pricey equipment (or just the plain old authorities), more quasi-brained dumbarses are bound to follow.

The reason we as a nation get ****ed over so hard is WE HAVE NO BILL OF RIGHTS

Every freedom we as a nation have is an IMPLIED freedom, The government CAN take pretty much away simply by passing a law

Seriously you should go read up on this, its frightening how little rights we as a nation have

There has ben countless examples of small issues that happen once the media react and the police being lazy go 'we need more power' so within a few weeks a NEW law has been passed through parliament, that is how quick it is for them to outlaw something here

Everybody should go learn more, its disgusting and if you as an Australian dont already know about it you MUST learn how little freedom you really have

First of all, please explain how a laser pointer can crash a plane (keep in mind, I'm a pilot - so no bull****)

Secondly, the fact that one person can get something banned for the whole county is just plain stupid.

And thirdly, the fact that someone now needs a "laser pointer license" is just so, so retarded.

Well you wouldn't like anyone pointing higher-powered laser devices into your eyes when you're piloting a plane. Temporarily blinding a pilot is something they're trying to prevent, and despite the small chance of this happening, it's a risk not too many people are willing to take with human lives and equipment literally worth aeroplanes.

And while it may only have been one person, of course they want to stop this happening before more people decide to try something like this.

And no, the laser pointer licence is not retarded. You only need it for lasers that exceed the power limit. The limit may be a little too low, if not ridiculous, but IMO it would be even dumber to let people own any kind of lasers they like - some of those things are way too powerful for most people. It's not only the fact that when misused they're way dangerous, but other things, such as appropriately disposing of them; some of them contain elements that should under no circumstances be dumped into ordnary landfills.

Also, just out of curiosity... what kinda plane(s) do you pilot?

That is a cop out mate

NO pilot would hit the ground from a laser device being pointed at them or even momentarily blinding them

the only risk comes from hitting a pilot during final approach for landing, and even then a pilot is trained to PULL UP the moment there is some issue that could affect landing, and pulling up is not the hardest process in the world, even while blinded, the process is so ingrained in a pilot they can do it with their eyes closed half asleep

THE ONLY reason it was banned, was because the media got a hold of it and started sprouting their bull**** as they usually do and then they all got on board the topic gang banging it making a mountain out of a NON issue so uneducated morons believe that it will crash your plane etc, and then the politicians did what they do best, they over reacted

It's how it always happens, Media create bull****, turn it into fact in peoples minds and the politicians don't like the bad press and the cops are too lazy to do their job they ban ****

EDIT:

And yes I have had a high powered laser shined in my eyes in the past, i do know the effects first hand and they are NO worse than having a light shined in your eyes, in fact having a powerful torch or spotlight shined in your face is FAR worse
