And while it may only have been one person, of course they want to stop this happening before more people decide to try something like this.

And no, the laser pointer licence is not retarded. You only need it for lasers that exceed the power limit. The limit may be a little too low, if not ridiculous, but IMO it would be even dumber to let people own any kind of lasers they like - some of those things are way too powerful for most people. It's not only the fact that when misused they're way dangerous, but other things, such as appropriately disposing of them; some of them contain elements that should under no circumstances be dumped into ordnary landfills.

Also, just out of curiosity... what kinda plane(s) do you pilot?

I guess you have a point - which is obviously the way those in government see it too. To me it seems stupid that rather than going after one person who is being an idiot, they decide to change the rules for everyone - whilst that one person still has his laser and still occasionally shines it at planes.

As for the "temporary blinding" of a pilot, to do that you would need an extremely expensive laser. A 250mw hand-held would be too dispersed and weak (remember aircraft coming in to land are still many kilometers up) - you would need a $10000 5w or more laser - which is highly unlikely. The pilots of the aircraft who got interviewed said it was "distracting", and not much else.

A commercial pilot is so experienced that he/she can easily land the aircraft without looking out of the cockpit - so I wouldn't imagine some retard with a laser would be that detrimental to their landing.

As for the aircraft that I fly, they are not particularly impressive (twin or single engine turboprop) and I don't do it for a job, but still have plenty of flying experience.

Maybe so, but apparently it's still seen as a risk - regardless whether the risk is actually real.

I honestly don't think they will be able to get away with too much more of this crap.

Honestly as much as I love Australia...This is really embarrassing and stupid.

Nothing apparent about it mate, its obvious its seen as a risk, just like iphone apps and games and the internet at large is seen as a risk...

see where I'm going with this? the risk does not exist in reality, its only a risk to those in power

I love Australia, I'm more patriotic than most and im the first guy to wanna punch someone in the face when they say they hate this country itself rather than saying they hate the goverment. but even I HATE what is being done to our country enough to consider moving overseas and that is something I'd never have thought to considered even a few short years ago

Yep but the twist is that they built a time machine and got the members from the 50's.

"Oh golly gosh, I believe she is showing her shin in this scene. We'll be reasonable though, give it a X rating..."

I love the system, so much that it hurts.

Not good, they should give Australians some kind of freedom on this.

I didn't mean the risk is apparent, I mean that it's apparent that it is perceived as one.

Isn't that more or less my previous statement paraphrased:
