They're really trying to compete with the OSS community. Too bad they'll never really meet the same level of expectations.
Active Directory is a good reason to run a windows server.

Been using Windows Server 2008 for a year now. I can play all the latest games, software, etc..

It works perfectly, no different than Vista on my laptop.

Smart men once told me a Windows based server, for ANYTHING is nothing but a headache. Also that if you can do it in windows server, linux or unix can do it too, with less headaches at that. They were right, and i will never question them again.

Obviously you have never setup a Windows Server vs. a Linux server.

Everything Linux/Unix can do, Windows Server can also do. And it can do it with less headaches...from a Windows admin perspective, anyway. To people used to dialog boxes and GUI interfaces, all the command line and scripting in Linux/Unix is unnecessarily complicated. Quite the opposite perspective exists to *nix advocates...they consider that "flexibility".

Both are right...your "smart men" are just biased towards *nix. I don't mean that derogatorily necessarily, it is my experience that almost everyone in IT becomes biased towards what their personal skill set is. I myself fight a bias towards products I used to be "the guy" for when I was more hands-on; but such bias is not appropriate in my current position, so I must force myself to keep an open mind and look at all sides of each product when doing a product eval.

That said, I have a strong bias towards Microsoft Servers from a purely managerial perspective. The fact is that they are easier to maintain: tools are easier to understand, and there is an army of people in the world that know how to administer Windows servers that cost less than comparable *nix administrators.

Well, there are a few things that each can do that the other can't. For example, Windows doesn't have DHCP failover, and Linux doesn't have Active Directory (at least not for Windows clients).

And the real smart men know how to use both and where to apply them!
