For the retail version if there any OS issues you can contact MS directly and they will support it for you.

I always purchase OEM cuz I have never had a reason to contact MS. If you built it yourself best to fix it yourself

If I “retire” a PC with an OEM license on it, can I use that software on a new PC?
ANSWER. No. To put it simply, OEM product is “married” to the original PC on which it was installed. Current OEM licenses are not transferable from one machine to another. The software cannot be moved from PC to PC, even if the original PC it was installed on is no longer in use. This is true for all OEM software – operating systems and applications.
So again: the representative should not have activated my OEM copy of XP on my sig rig because it was originally activated on the pre-built Gateway that I was retiring. She should have denied my request and told me to buy a new copy. If she had done that, then it would not have surprised me since I was actually expecting to be rejected.

And according to this, it all makes sense:
Quote:
What is an OEM license?
ANSWER. An “OEM” license is a license distributed by an Original Equipment Manufacturer, or an “OEM.” An OEM is a person or company who builds and sells computers. Some OEMs also distribute software, especially operating systems such as Microsoft® Windows.
Combined with this:
Quote:
What is the difference between OEM product and Full-Packaged Product (FPP)?
ANSWER. OEM products are intended to be preinstalled on hardware before the end user purchases the product. They are “shrink wrapped” and do not come in a box like the retail products do. Full-Packaged Product (FPP) is boxed with CD(s), manuals, and the EULA and is sold in retail stores in individual boxes. The End User License Agreements (commonly referred to as “EULAs”) for OEM and FPP products are slightly different. One main difference is that an OEM operating system license (such as the license for Windows) cannot be transferred from its original PC to another PC. However, the FPP version of Windows may be transferred to another PC as long as the EULA, manual and media (such as the backup CD) accompany the transfer to the other PC. Also, when a customer purchases an OEM product, the OEM license requires the OEM to provide support for the product.
The rest of the document is a bit repetitive, but the main thing that applies here is that technically speaking, we are not allowed to install an OEM copy on a system, retire that system (and even have it recycled), and then install and activate that OEM copy on a new system. If a Microsoft representative helps you do it, then they are doing something wrong because they are just trying to be nice.

That was a good read. One thing I don't get however is the whole license being married to the PC it came installed on. I have only ever used an OEM install disk since Windows XP and have never had a problem with either re-installing on a new build or even if I have to clean install on my current build. When I install it again it is either hit or miss in regards to activating the software without having to call MS but the whole phone activation proccess is pretty simple and completely automated. I just provide the phone activation code, state that it is only installed on 1 PC (which it is only ever installed on one PC) and the automated system provides me with the code needed to activate the software.

It's not that it's impossible, but it's that we are technically not supposed to do it. It's like saying that we aren't supposed to drive over the speed limit, but yet we still do.

I'll have to try again tonight when I get home, I scheduled a defrag to run last night. Or I wonder if it's using the wrong drive...one would think that the C: drive would be the "primary" drive to Windows; but it is actually the third in my BIOS, behind two 7200rpm drives.

And an SSD only getting a 6.9? So is it even possible to get a full 7.9 with anything available today?

You need atleast 2 SSDs for max hard drive score, and not some lowly SSDs - you need Intel X25s.

I get 7.9 on my sig rig below.
