Default [Anand] Windows 7 Performance Guide

Quote:
Windows 7 is being born in to a world of uncertainty, one Microsoft has never faced before to such a degree. Apple’s (and Mac OS X) market share is the highest it’s been in over a decade. Linux has finally gained however small a foothold in home computers through netbooks. And what was Microsoft’s next-gen operating system, Windows Vista, has taken enough backlash that it’s going to be in therapy for the rest of its life.

By no means are these troubled times for Microsoft, but never has victory been less assured.

Unfortunately, Windows Vista started life as a technical misfit, something even we didn’t fully comprehend until later. It ate too much virtual address space, it copied files slowly, and it ran poorly on the lowest of the low-end computers of the time. Microsoft fixed many of these problems by the time SP1 hit, but by then it was too late. Vista went from a technical misfit to a social misfit, with no hope of immediate redemption.

So Windows 7 is being launched with some gargantuan tasks on its shoulders, few of them technical. First and foremost, it needs to reverse Vista’s (and by extension, Microsoft’s) bad image among existing Windows users, in order to get them off of the old and insecure Windows XP. Then it needs to help stem the continuing flow of Windows users to Mac OS X, which has continued to grow over the years. And finally, it still needs to innovate enough so that Windows doesn’t end up stagnant, and ideally sell a few copies to Vista users while it’s at it.
Quote:
With the launch of Windows 7, there are really 3 different tales to tell. There’s Windows 7, the OS that replaces Vista. There’s Windows 7, the OS that needs to do what Vista failed to do and kill XP. And there’s Windows 7, the OS that needs to put a stop to Apple’s continuing growth. We’re going to look at all 3.

I'm sitting here waiting for UPS to deliver Windows 7, and I was just thinking to myself "Damn. I'm all backed up and ready to go, but UPS hasn't arrived yet. Now what do I do?" Well, now I have something to do! hehe I'll probably have this entire article read by the time they get here.

My system does a complete cycle shut down and boot up in less than a minute with an IDE DVD-RW drive... Windows 7 moves!

yeah i've got an IDE dvd drive too. had it for ages.

might consider actually buying a bluray drive once we can burn them for less than $900.

Hmm, this isn't what I thought it was going to be...I was expecting a performance tuning guide. Oh well.

My rig got a lowly 5.9 Windows Experience score...something's wrong, everything was in the 7.x's except my drive got a 5.9. But it's a Velociraptor, not some old 5400rpm junker! I'll have to try again tonight when I get home, I scheduled a defrag to run last night. Or I wonder if it's using the wrong drive...one would think that the C: drive would be the "primary" drive to Windows; but it is actually the third in my BIOS, behind two 7200rpm drives.

You can get BD-R's for about $3.50 each in a small spindle. That's not that expensive.

5.9 is normal and on par for the VelociRaptor. Besides, check this out:
Quote:
The scores currently range from 1.0 to 7.9. The Windows Experience Index is designed to accommodate advances in computer technology. As hardware speed and performance improve, higher score ranges will be enabled. The standards for each level of the index generally stay the same. However, in some cases, new tests might be developed that can result in lower scores.
So the VelociRaptor will get a lower score sometime in the future.

You need SSDs.

Anything thats not Raid 0 or Solid State Harddrives will score 5.9 or below. Going from a Raptor to a SSD improved my score from 5.9 to 6.9
