I just caught this, it was posted a few minutes ago. I hope it is new to you guys. Sorry if it isn't. I would surprised that MSNBC broke it first.

Not to be ethnocentric, but I don't really like this. It would make urls even harder to nail down, but whatever, you can't expect it to stay the same.

Maybe we should just use a set of universal characters that are not based on any current language, or a combination of all langauges Or maybe we should just go back to using numbers (IPv4) or hex (IPv6)

This is only allowing their use. This isn't mandating it. Anyone who would visit a site using such characters would likely be able to read them.

Example: Asian websites.

I thought people already were calling this a bad idea because of phishing links? Im sure you could rewrite paypall.com with non latin characters fairly easily.

Somebody at ICANN needs to get slapped. I see this going very well for about ten minutes then ctrl+z. Now adding a feature where a browser converts text from script to Latin or Latin to script so that the address bar shows the website name in somebody's native language but still works the same as always in the background I could get behind.

Non-american people (usually) use other keyboard layouts than the standard US American layout, such as Danish (which I sometimes use), and Asian people who usually use the compose key for typing in letters - - Kanji for example has way over 1000 "letters" in it, forcing the use of the compose key.
