Default [ARS] Microsoft selling crapware-free PCs in its stores

Quote:
Not only is Microsoft reselling select Windows 7 PCs normally sold by its hardware partners, but the company is making sure they come only with the software it wants. Yes, that means that if you buy a PC from Microsoft, it won't come with the usual "crapware," though it won't be a clean install either. Microsoft is still bundling its own software, including Windows Live Essentials and Microsoft Security Essentials, as well as Adobe software.
About freakin' time someone did this. Sad that we had to wait for MS.

Actually...the software pre-loaded is not bad.

I mean...it'll actually give end users a nice array of software to get up and going from just the plugging in point.

It depends on the user. A co-worker brought me her personal laptop and it was bogged down by all the pre-loaded stuff that she never used. Yes it's there for their convenience but the majority of them just look past it.

I agree with Tator here: Microsoft is still bundling its own software, including Windows Live Essentials and Microsoft Security Essentials, as well as Adobe software.

Live Essentials = Movie Maker, Messenger, Photo Viewer, DVD Maker, and a couple of others. Not really bloat in my book.

MSE = Pretty good so far here. Seems to work fine and is really light.

Adobe = Flash Player, MacroMedia, Reader; you'll need that anyway.

Looks good.

My sister's last computer purchase was an HP lappy that came with over 45 programs that were absolute rubbish and ranged from an e-Bay app to an HP store app. I think people would appreciate this.

I'm stuck in the dark side of IT, (Geek Squad >.<) and as long as your store's agents aren't ******* (see math: fractions: 1/100) the optimization service really does work magic. I actually REMOVE the garbageware instead of deleting the icon or turning it off in MSConfig. Make sure all the drivers are updated, and when a model has a known sftware error (remember the Toshiba laptops that had the registry filter error?) I've always taken the extra time to be sure it got fixed before it left. Microsoft doing this is just taking the next step in their giant business, doing it before anyone else can.

This is besides the fact that nobody should have to do that in the first place...

Look at the post above, all of that software is pretty good for any general user. And I have most of it installed on my machines.

HP is the worst, they make good PCs but sheesh, there is a ton of crap on there. They don't give you a Windows disc either which stinks.

I'm glad I either build my PCs or get OS-less Laptops on ebay.
