Default [TheAge]Macs a growing target for malware: Sophos

Quote:
The Mac is the target of malware, writes Garry Barker.
AS IF the Great Financial Crisis were not depressing enough, even in Australia, where our truckloads of dirt sent to China maintain our buoyancy, we are constantly assaulted by all sorts of dire "the sky is falling" stuff, even in repositories of trivia such as Facebook.
So it is with computer malware — viruses, worms, trojans, botnets, phishing, ID theft, RSPlug exploits and so on.

Okay recliner boy: I have said for years that the Mac OS is not safer just a less appealing target, as in not worth attacking. The fact that this is becoming such a big issues means two things: 1) Macs aren't perfectly secure, and 2) Windows based machines keep getting safer. This wont end well.... obvious news report is obvious. As Mac's become more popular hackers will start to attack it. I'm sure everyone here knows that.

It all started because someone said that Macs don't get viruses, if that person didn't say that, then this news wouldn't happen

For decades Mac users have been the Volvo drivers of cyberspace, confident the strength of the machines protect them from calamity.

And it remains true, as Sean Richmond of computer security firm Sophos says. "The threat for Macintosh is still nowhere near that of Windows," he says.
Hmmm.. Yeah. Wonder why you didnt quote that..

Not safer? Oh? Someone needs to go read a book. Actually, read the article. It CLEARLY says they are still much more secure.

The thing is, all the programs that can attack mac RELY on people saying "Yes". As opposed to what Windows had for year; a huge ass backdoor that just about anything could sneak into.

They really dont... I would love if OCN realized the difference between Virus, Malware, Spyware, and Worms.

I'll be the one to admitt I'd like to see the mac world taken down a couple notches. I'm sick of people acting superior (not all). I'm sure there are multiple reasons but the biggest reason there isn't a lot of virus/trojans/malware is because Macs only a small part of the market. If they were a bigger share holder, there'd be more vulnerabilities.

Ah, indeed I did .

Also in regards to the whole mac user superiority thing.. Every single person I've ever seen/known with a Mac computer doesn't act superior.. Well except one, but he's a "special" case... In every definition of the word .

It's like the whole customer service thing. Apple is apparently top rated in that department and rightly uses that in their ads. The argument that they have less customers and are therefore able to provide better services doesn't change the fact that their customer service was still top rated. Same concept with Apple's marketshare and the amount of malware directed against Macs. Because they have less marketshare and therefore less crapware aimed at them doesn't change the fact that they are technically safer than their PC counterparts.

And of course this is why Mac wins all the hacking contests every year... /sarcasm

P.S. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, Mac is usually the first OS hacked in these hacking contests.
