Default [DT] Study: Win 7 is Lean, But Many Windows 7 Laptops are Badly Bloated

Quote:
Apple's ads may unfairly insult Microsoft on some topics, but they do accurately point out some of the problems of the PC market now and then. One of the points they've tried to drive home is how bloated with useless programs the average Windows PC is. And it's a largely apt point.

A new study looking at computers from eight different manufacturers, including Apple found that while Windows 7 stacks up competitively to Apple's Snow Leopard when it comes to performance, OEMs are killing it with junkware. Typically, with Windows PCs, manufacturers have piled on mounds of free and largely useless software onboard, bringing their boot times to a crawl and eating up disk space. While not a problem to enthusiasts building their own systems, this industry practice is a headache to casual consumers.

I always believed SOME of the reason pcs with windows are offered at the cost they are because they are subsidized by this crapware to offset low cost.

How is it a "Windows 7" problem that companies pre-install bloatware on it ? It goes without saying that performance is going to be bogged down.

Aren't all laptops bloated with crap in general? That's how their so cheap. Doesn't matter if it's Win7, Vista or XP. Laptops come bloated with crap.

Drivers are available on manufacturers website therefore shouldn't be a problem.

That's what I did with my netbooks. The difference was night and day.

My Studio XPS 16 with a clean install of Win 7 has been working like a champion. Alternatively, my mom's Acer and all it's bundled, bloaty goodness would make the average person's hair turn gray and then fall out.
