I wonder how come a BRAND NEW copy of windows 7 cant be resilient to malware created after its release! you're so sneaky! and what? its not vulnerable to the 3 "viruses" that were patched for back in 2003? O-M-G! Sophos! you're so good at making blog posts!

But didn't MS say Win7 is more secure than Linux and our daft little cousin OSX?

While part of linux's security is that people don't write viruses for linux, another part is that we have systems of trusted sources. Going root means password verification.

Windows on the other hand requires you to search the internet for the program you want. It runs as admin constantly. Don't get me wrong, I like Windows for some things but MS made the claim that Win7 is more secure. It isn't.

1. It is the most secure operating system in the world. While you're busy coughing down the semantics of "secure," you need to pay attention to the fact that it's also the most vulnerable. No other operating system has the all-encompassing security features that Windows 7 has. It's entirely true, from a certain point of view.

2. Windows 7 doesn't run admin constantly. it hasn't since XP.

Not to knock on Linux, it is unquestionably more SECURE than Windows, but it is most definitely not IMMUNE. Yes, you need root access to do significant damage to Linux, but virus, malware, worms, and trojans have been on the rise in recent years due to the increased popularity of Linux as an alternative to Windows or OSX. The people/hackers/morons creating them find any exploit they can and make your life crap, just to get their rocks off.

Now admittedly my source is Wikipedia (they tend to be very bias on many subjects), but, in general, the article does make a good point.

What he said.

Vista is an absolute pain in the kester when it comes to the UAC asking for permission to do the simplest things. The only way to get the constant 5 step questions for everything to go away was to turn off the UAC. W7 is a lot better and, while I haven't played with it, I believe that I read somewhere you can turn the UAC off for individual programs that you use frequently (not so sure on this though).

And I'm probably vulnerable to 11/10 viruses using Vista without a realtime AV. And yet I'm just fine and dandy and clean.
QQ more, Sophos.

I find this funny, I've used Vista since launch and now Win 7, I've never been infected with a virus, and if I'm on a site or get linked to a site that contains a harmful threat, LIKE OH MY GOD, my Avast on-access protection stops it, and aborts the connection to the site.

Windows 7/Vista Security has been top notch throughout my usage of them both. (XP is another kettle of fish). It is like what they said, Vista was all about security, and Windows 7 is all about features and faster performance/streamlining, but also has the security that Vista instilled in the first place.

This guy is laughable.
