Default [NeoWin] Sophos: Windows 7 vulnerable to 8/10 viruses, FUD alert

Yesterday, a senior security advisor at Sophos, who is responsible for working with the security community and communicating information on security threats to IT professionals, posted an entry on his blog entitled "Windows 7 vulnerable to 8 out of 10 viruses". Given the bad publicity that surrounded the launch of Windows Vista, is this yet another failing on the part of Microsoft that will lead to poor adoption of the Windows 7 platform? Fortunately for Microsoft, if you take the time to read the entry, it turns out that the tests are not even close to stringent enough to make claims that many will interpret to mean Windows 7 is vulnerable to 80% of the infections in the wild.

What more do you want? Any system(OS) is vulnerable to nearly all viruses..

lol my school uses that program.

They set it to block some .exe's that are loaded (so you can't install firefox to circumvent their proxy server), but it's so friggin easy to get around. They don't even block putty, so it takes me less than 2 minutes to get free.

8/10 viruses involve user authorization. Both OSX and Linux would be vulnerable to 8/10 viruses if someone took the time to port them.

OSX User: Oh look funny dog pictures, I'm going to download them!
"Funny Dog Pictures requires that you type your password"
OSX User: Hurr Durr, OK!

There isn't anything Apple or Microsoft can do about that, except detect the virus code through Heuristics (Microsoft gives you software to do this for free, Apple doesn't)

The other 2/10 are viruses that no amount of common sense can stop, but thankfully both Vista and 7 will stop them.

Without an Anti-Virus, you're vulnerable to viruses.

And in other News: Without an umbrella, you're vulnerable to rain.

Hmm, didn't know Captain Obvious was writing articles for FUD...
