And what's the point in archiving people's search history anyway?

Internet search bar voyeurism?

Chrome has nothing to do with it, you don't need to give personal details to download Chrome. Nor does archiving search history. If you actually bother to read the article it tells you what information this service provides: information that people with Google-based services willingly offer in using their services. Search history doesn't even come into it.

Almost anything you are registered for has a record of your personal information, whether you like it or not. Google is offering transparency. Which is a GOOD thing.

This isn't really accurate, they know more than it shows. I signed up and it showed nothing, it didn't show anything maybe because: Cookies were cleared, stuff is stored on the account instead of going to their database for your ip, they look for your account. No matter what it says they know more.
