I figured this should be posted as lots of people on here are getting the student downloads which may include downloading the OS files in stead of the disk ISO. The tool listed in this article may have been recommended to you for getting the files on to disk or usb. Until there is another MS tool released or if you are looking for a way to get your files or ISO on to disk or usb, you can use these methods. Use this first if you have the files to convert to ISO before proceeding. Only need to use steps 1-7 How to create a bootable usb from the ISO. If you have the files then you already have Ultraiso(the trial version will perform all the tasks needed). If you did not need Ultraiso then you can also use Imgbrn to burn the ISO to disk.

Unetbootin is probably the easiest.

Thanks. That is a good ISO burner for Win and *nix if you needed one also (and the live cd's are always handy too). Though the main difficulty that I have noticed with people and their student downloads is taking the files and converting it to an ISO. Burning the ISO is the easier part.

There are many other programs you can use. WinToFlash is the easiest. Another is unetbootin.

So MS is in trouble for using an open source code incorrectly?
Hmm, so much for open source being truly open. What exactly were they using incorrectly? I just used this tutorial to set my Windows 7 install on a USB.

I just used an HP tool floating around the net to make the USB bootable, then just copied the files from the iso onto the USB drive. If you have the plain files and no ISO, even better, no need to create or mount an ISO image, just make your USB drive bootable by any of a hundred methods, and copy the files over, VIOLA!

I used this tool for putting 7 on DVD's twice. I still have it on my PC, too. Guess it's a good thing I've done it already.

This is good to know. I had this issue big time last night and didn't know WHAT to do! Basically my backup disc that I ordered to install Windows 7 did NOT come with a key so I had to try to put it in with the downloaded version that did have a key and this didn't work... basically I still have no Product Key.
But back on topic, I hope this helps out all those students that are victims of Digital River screwing up!
