You guys understand this is a stupidly biased article. It's like reading about news on Fudzilla. TF have had a history of bending words to fit their agenda and if anything, are just as bad at spreading scare tactics as the bloody Governement.
Anyway, with that off my chest, it's not a great thing, but if you think the British Government with their stupendous amounts of debt are going to chase file sharers and put them in jail, you're really blinded by the paranoia and stuff TF writes.

Look where that got them. Now this law, along with the Terrorism act will be used in a manner for which it was not intended. In order to "catch" pirates, there will be a massive increase in internet snooping, and whos to say that wont catch other "offenders". This will be circumvented somehow.

Oh well. Iandh said it best.
However, this will give the industry alot more snooping headroom and we all know that they are just as bad as the "pirates". I suspect a decrease within personal rights as well. The power hungry ones feast on bills like these.

These things will not happen. Just scare tactics. They have to be in line with European law aswell as british Law.
__________________Information security act for one is a law which would be broken. They may announce this but it will not have any legs. They will hope at least it will scare people. Also the 3 strikes issue. IsP's will fight this to the teeth. They will not want to loose customers by disconnects. ISPs will loose customers and have to add more staff to implement these measures. ALSO, with elections on the horizon, you are unlikely to see any politician back it. For popularity, they will bury it.

The Digital Economy Bill would still have to get itself through the House of Lords. That's if its even possible to implement as it violates the very principles of the Data Proection Act 1998. In addition, I doubt jail time could ever be authorised as those sort of sentences are used in criminal law as opposed to civil, which is what copyright infringement falls under in the UK.

Shame, western democratic governments somewhat upheld the construct of a life free from unwarranted government intrusion before they took up the job of mall cop.

Actually, that's the complete frakking opposite of how the legal system in the United States of America works, which since it is descended of English Common law, you would think would be the same there.
On the other hand perhaps not, since it was the incredibly vague Writs of Assistance that inspired the Forth Amendment to the US Constitution which spells out specific criteria that must be met for a judge to issue a search warrant. Combined with the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution, which is the right not to speak to the authorities, it spells out that the people of this nation determined that the burden of proof for the guilt of a man be rested squarely on the shoulders of the accuser. The accused need do nothing to prove their innocence, the accuser must prove their guilt. Tyranny is always accompanied by a few pieces of rhetoric, and "if you have nothing to hide" is front and center.
