Default Can't hear out of speakers!

Hii, I have an laptop and I occassionaly plug my speakers in so that I can view a video or something. Well that's my problem, the default speakers work fine but aren't loud enough and when I plug my own speakers.. nothing comes through them and nothing through the default speakers! I try unplugging and replugging them back and it doesn't work. Nothing is wrong with the laptop or speakers I believe it's a software problem or something. I'm using Vista 32-Bit Home Premium. Anyone experiencing the same problem that car offer advice?

I believe that sounds like a hardware problem. There should always be signal coming out of that jack so... sorry, I just don't really know enough to help you. What kind of laptop is it, and did the headphone jack ever work?
