any mic will do just fine.

about senn's bass extension, believe me, even the HD595(with a preamp) doesn't produce a low bass very good, try it on movies with DTS or Dolby Full Dynamic Range, and compare with any good headphones... even philips headphone produce better low bass.

Oh, would a local retail store happen to have these for me to demo or something?

I doubt it, since they are apparently they are from japan... but was just wondering

I'm talking about the audio technica's, either a500 or ad500.

Yes, they're not as bassy as, say, DT770s, but their extension is just fine. It's tighter than most, but very much present. And pretty much anyone would say that HD595s ARE good headphones.

If the quality of sound is equal between the open and closed models and you are concerned about annoying those around you, definitely go with the closed model. I have a set of Bose that are closed and Sennheiser that are open and the opens are WAY louder to the wife across the room than the Bose when they are at the same volume level.

I'm going to take my chances on the open Since this set will be my primary listening device it will need to be comfortable; open.

I don't think they will bother other people in the room enough. My speakers do ATM. But it's not like these headphones would be at the same volume as my speakers, since they will be right up against my ears lol.

Thanks for the input guys, i'm pretty much set now on the Audio Technica ATH-AD500's, the X-FI ExtremeMusic OEM, and the Zalman Clip on ZM-MIC 1.

I'll probably be ordering friday. I'll come back and give out some rep in a little. ATM it's too hot to sit at the computer lol.

yes... overall HD595 is almost the best at it's class... but like everything else in this world, it has flaws, and one of it is what i have mentioned earlier.

it's not the bass power i'm talking about... it's a certain frequency of a bass that produce much like a faint rumbling sound.

we've been hearing about good things about senns and audio technica. now it's time for the downside
1 thing i don't like about sennheisers, they don't produce low bass(ie:grumbling sound) so well...
and 1 thing about audio technica... they produce a very bright hi freq sound... not very good for some ppl (especially when combined with x-fi, since x-fi is well known to produce very bright sound).

so decide on your own now, which one u like better

oo yeah... air headphones are very comfortable, but sealed headphones give more db.

about the disturbance of the excess sound from air headphones, relax, nothing will be heard from 5 feet distance or more (without tearing your eardrums first)
My HD595's had great bass, you had to give them a decent amp to really notice it, but it was there. They just needed more current to achieve greatness. And if you think Senns don't have bass try a pair of HD650's on for size

Doesn't bothere me though cos I have the PC in my room and I'm pretty much theo nly one in here a lot of the time.
it really depends on the headphones, the music, and the volume. Some headphones are more open than others just like some closed headphones offer more isolation than others. There are varying degrees of openness and closedness within the generic types. (don't take that too literally)
If you can hear the music 15' away you are listening too loud! 5-7 feet away when a pair of open headphones are not on your head is about right. Maybe 10-12' if the music carries well in the room or it is really loud.
Once the headphones are on your head 4-6' away is probably the farthest you'll be able to hear it. Or 3-4' with the volumes I listen to

Open air headphones tend to have a "clearer" sound, while closed headphones tend to be more bassy.
Of course this depends on the headphones themselves, but it is a fairly accurate statement. Especially for lower model cans

the Zalman is a great mic

I haven't heard a pair of philips that produced better bass than HD595's. more bass relative to the other frequencies yes, but not better. This only goes to show that the Senns have a flatter response curve which is what you want anyway.
using a preamp might have been your problem anyway. a good pair of cans deserves to have a dedicated headphone amp

I would go as far as to say that the stock DT770's are too bassy, and the bass is too loose. I paid $65 for leather pads to help tame the bass a bit on mine (yes I know that's more than many people here spend on headphones )

I think we have a basshead on our hands! Have you ever tried a pair of bass heavy AKG k340's? you should!

ah.... i give up

i was saying... it's not that senns have worse bass... they're good, it's just that low bass is not a particular characteristic of senns.
and while other is not better than senns (or far worse than senns) in general, some of them produce better low bass.
it's not that i'm a basshead, but it's quite significant when we're watching movies... preferably action movies with many explotions and rumbling sound effects.

there has to be a catch... like every other things in this world...

I've never heard headphones that produce what you're describing. It's almost subwoofer-ish. The most bass impact from headphones has ever done to me is made me blink
