At this point.... Get the X-Fi Elite Pro. It is on sale at Newegg for $80 AR bundled with a $50 headset.

The Xonar can replicate EAX5 effects, and in tests has the better sounds quality. But, the deciding feature is that it looks just so damn cool!

This is not like vga cards or cpus..and most of the review sites do they actually use the same setup or same audio file for testing? You say the X-Meridian is better than the Prelude is it? have you heard them in real life? Well i have..The prelude sounds way better than the X-Meridan in every aspect......+ Most of the review sites that test sound cards are PCg33ks.....Audio is very different mate.....
I have never read anything so made up. The Prelude sound better than the X-Meridian? I honestly don't believe that you've actually listened to both. I actually owned the Prelude before I traded it for my friend's X-Meridian, and in the end CMI8788 Oxygen HD just sounds better than EMU20K1, that's all there is to it.

I'm looking over the sound cards right now, I'm going to buy a sound card soon and I've been reading a lot of reviews and been getting a lot of advice and the Prelude is the dominant in my opinion over the Xonar.
