Default is your x-fi mic not working in vista? try this

connect mic to right spot

this is why mine wouldn't work, make sure that windows knows x-fi is where you want your mic to work, not on board sound

and make sure your x-fi out speakers are defaulted.

Then on the audio console, make sure mic volume on the left is... well, its mic PLAYBACK so if you don't want to hear through the speakers what you are saying on the mic, leave this all the way down (but not muted) then, the slider on the far right, make sure it is set to Microphone... volume max. Don't increase by 20dB unless you really need to though. Then, go to settings, and make sure it is mic/line in, not digital I/O.

Try resetting to default then back if it doesn't work.
