How do you get Itunes to play 5.1? I can't figure it out.

In Itunes 6 there used to be an option to enable 5.1 sound, the only thing that I have found to work to play 5.1 in itunes is this:

Here's how I got it to work on my system:

1. In iTunes --> Edit --> Preferences, uncheck crossfade, sound enhancer and sound check.
2. Close iTunes 7
3. Control Panel --> Quicktime --> Audio
4. Checked the box that says "Safe mode (waveOut only)"
5. Under "Sound Out", set rate to "192 kHz", size to "16-bit" and channels to "5.1 ..."
6. Click OK
7. Opened the my video card's settings (EAX console) and ensured the EQ with the settings the way I like it by verifying the sound with Windows Media Player.
8. Opened iTunes 7 and the snap-crackle-pop was gone for the most part. I now only get it for a very short moment when (a) the PC does some very CPU intensive task or (b) when iTunes sounds a wav file (to make the Windows beep sound).

Note that this is the work-around that has worked for my setup. iTunes does need to be fixed and I'm sure that they will. If this workaround does not work for you, I recommed uninstalling iTunes 7 and Quicktime and installing version 6 (do a Google search) until an update is available.

I hope this helps at least some of you who are having these issues.

If that doesn't work for you then just revert to Itunes 6 and you should be able to get 5.1 until they fix 7.

Generally, if you have non onboard sound, you can tell the software that came with the card to play through all speakers. Creative does this through their EAX console, and I think razer does it automatically (i haven't had a chance to play with the setting since i got mine yesterday.) But i think the only time you might run into this is through onboard, but i would imagine that onboard has some sort of setting to enable it considering onboard sound is getting better and better.

I just tried this with my onboard sound (Realtek) and I can tell a big difference between what I used (WMP and MediaMonkey) and this. I listened to "Enya - Orinoco Flow" before and after the Channel Mixer plugin - I think it made a big difference sail away, sail away....

Sorry about the double post then because I didn't realize that DJbigbear had put that into his foobar guide.

I based my guide off of how he told me to set up 5.1 a while back.

Since we're already on this... does anybody know how to use ffdshow as foobar2000's decoder instead of its built-in decoders?

ffdshow has audio filters like Crystality and Freeverb (similar to the X-Fi Crystallizer), and with the right settings, they can make your type of music sound much better... but there doesn't seem to be a way to get foobar2000 to use DirectShow to play audio.
