What happened to getting an outboard DAC and using the X-Fi for gaming?

If you do that, don't you need to disable the external dac when you are gaming and vice versa when you are listening to music to avoid driver conflict? But I guess that's not a problem if you don't use a usb dac and use a optical dac like the Zero or Zhaolu instead.

They are both amazing cards, but I voted for the Prelude since you will be gaming. Plus being able to swap OPAMPs makes it very easy to change the sound signature of your card.

Yes, but disabling the DAC is as easy as flipping a switch or a couple clicks in Windows.

The Auzentech X-Fi Prelude is the better option in my opinion, you really need the X-Fi APU for gaming features (If you game of course). Plus the Prelude has excellent sound quality and the price is quite reasonable right now (I got it back when it was $200).

Hi duckydude! how's the sound quality from the Prelude + Zhaolu via optical compared to something like a E-Mu 0404 USB?
