Default X-fi E/M is Xtremely Bad for Music

hey ocn,

i installed my new-to-me X-fi about 2 weeks ago on my sig rig and found it ok for gaming and such, but now that i've transferred all of my music onto this computer, i'm noticing that anything played out of this card is HEADACHE INDUCING

The sound sounds like someone is periodicly turning the volume knob up and down in an attempt to annoy. (like sinusoidally changing volume)

i soon found out that this occurs whenever a bass drum is hit, (or any low beat) all other parts of the music DISAPPEAR then ramp up the volume inbetween beats......

this is redicuous, i've tried 3 sets of headphones and set the output setup to "headphone", even with the bass turned all the way down it does this.....

in song sequences where there is no bass, it sounds great but i have a really bad headache from trying to find the problem...

Turn off the Crystalizer and SVM. Use audio creation mode and bit-matched playback.

You say new-to-me, does that mean it's used?

Newest Drivers?
Check Connection?
Re-seat card?
Are you connecting your headphones straight into the jack?

Also, don't use the headphone mode, use the speaker/2 channel mode for headphones as well as your speakers.

@ joe, i installed the drivers from the creative website, so i assume they're the newest
@ duckydude tried it and still the issue

-headphones are straight into the 2nd hole
-----|(empty)| ---- |(empty)|----|(headphone)|----|(mic)|

speakers still do it......sigh

it's like the bass is overpowering everything, even with it turned all the way down

ideas???

I sold it to him a couple weeks ago, was in perfect working order when I sent it. I'm thinking it's a driver/improper seating problem.

i unstalled creative drivers (and some lingering soundmax ones) and re-installed the card, (nothing in the immediate adjacent slots), re-installed the creative drivers,

Same problem .......

when i was about to close my case up again i did notice that this capacitor was bent to the side a little but i don't think that capacitor has anything to do with basic playback so i won't point my finger at it. unless someone knows the intricasies of the pcb layout

It sounds like you have some kind of effect on it.
What you're describing sounds like a compressor or limiter.

-Have you tried playing the music on another media player?
For example, I use Foobar and you can add DSP's to create effects or change the way the music sounds.

-Are they're effects on the Creative control panel?

Make sure none of those are on.
