Default cant get input to come out of speakers

I have my xbox 360 hooked up to my old computer and LCD monitor the sound goes into the sound card via the input and comes out of the speakers like it should (this machine runs XP) now I wanted to get rid of the big desktop and just use my laptop to have the audio for my 360 so I plugged in the speakers and I plugged in the audio in the microphone jack of the laptop and the sound is not coming out the speakers, the laptop is getting the sound cause when I open up the sound recorder it records it but it wont project it out of the speakers (laptop runs vista home) how can I get it to do so?

You probablt do not have the correct codecs. Download the equivalent of FFD Show for Vista here .
It should find the correct codecs if that is indeed the problem.

It wouldn't be a codec problem I think.

In Control Panel > Sound > Double-Click speakers (or whatever your output may be).
Go over to the levels tab and make sure the mic level isn't muted or all the way down.

mics turned all the way up
downloading codecs.

When I was looking at the microphone levels I could tell that it was getting the input because the bars for the sound were moving when I chose a song (guitar hero) its just not coming out the speakers

Also in the sound window go to the recording tab and check the microphone level there.
A codec isn't going to make a difference in analog inputs and outputs.

You are correct sir. I stand corrected.

It doesn't hurt to have them anyway. This particular package I normally install on new Vista builds to alleviate any problems later on. It works like a charm for HD playback of any type of video file.

I don't know what you mean exactly, but did you also make sure all of your drivers are installed and up to date?

So you're saying you can record sounds from the mic input but you can't get it to come out the speakers live?

That's what a "line-in" port is for. If your laptop doesnt have that you might have a problem? I'm not sure exactly.
