Most of my music is 192kbps mp3 or ~210-260kbps VBR mp3, a few stray 320kbps CDs as well. I use Foobar and keep my XtremeGamer in 'AudioCreation' mode. (Was told it was better than entertainment mode for music.)
I enabled bit-matched playback, but that's as far as my 'tweaking' went. My audio 'setup' is in my sig, but it's XtremeGamer -> ProMedia 2.1s , and when I'm not using my speakers it's my AKG K81DJs.

rip everything from original CD to FLAC. You probably won't notice the difference on the Promedias, but you should hear something with the K81

Revitalized by Audio.

Go through the annoying (but worthwhile) task of re-ripping your cd collection into FLAC.

Upgrading is, of course, another possibility *cough new source cough*.

It will be worth it though. You're ears will thank you down the road. I don't consider it anymore time consuming than overclocking, and you can take it slow, like 10 CD's per day.

Are you using an ASIO plugin? It's one of the easiest ways to get music to sound better.

Seconded on the asio plugin. I'm using winamp w/ asio and the difference was remarkable.

ASIO would defenantly help and is easily obtained in foobar... it would bypass the Microsoft kernel and use the true power of your Sound card...
And the FLAC statement is definantly true... sounds soo much better in a lossless format... other options would be modifying your speakers/headphones/soundcard purchasing an amp (if needed) buying a new front end audio system...

I downloaded the ASIO plugin on my past installation of Windows but I really didn't understand it.
It confused me. I just downloaded it and put it in the plugin folder, and I couldn't figure out if it 'works' by itself or I had to do anything. Explain?

Hit ctrl + p and bring up your preferences.
Go down to your playback options and select the ASIO plugin. You'll have to expand the playback options and select it under 'output'.
