I'm going to be ordering the z-5500's this week and was wondering if it would be benefical to audio quality to get a soundcard to output the audio through rather than the onboard connecters on my maximus formula.
Im decided on the xonar so if it would be better to get it over using onboard audio connections is there any benefit of getting the d2x over the d2? As far as I can see the only difference between the d2x and the d2 is pci-e and pci connectors respectivly and a £20 price differece (with the d2x being more expensive). I have a pci slot and a pci-e free furthest away from my gpu so slot choice doesnt really matter to me at the moment. Thanks for any help.

Getting a Xonar or Prelude sound card will be most beneficial to your sound quality. The sound card that comes with the Maximus Formula is decent, but optical/coax outputs will sound much better.
As far as the D2 vs D2x, they look to be identical like you said, except for the PCI slot. Just pick one that best suits your board.

The D2X is supposedly cleaner, and has slightly better fidelity compared to the D2, according to this

Hmmm interesting. Spose it will be the d2x then thanks. Also looking at asus's site and the patches for each card, the d2x gets patched first I think, another little bonus
![]() Thanks for the help, off to spend too much money.
