Default Zalman mic - I wouldn't recommend it.

...It's complete garbage. I bought it to go with my Audio Technicas, but clipping it onto the headphone chord isn't exactly the best place since it's pick-up pattern is more cardioid then a more professional lavaliere microphone. Basically, you need to talk directly into it for it to pick up and be heard clearly. Boosting the gain picks up alot of room noise.

For gaming with friends and utilizing VoIP or Ventrillo servers I would not advise this kind of setup, and would rather go with a typical gaming headset for the better mic placement.

For single player experiences, a better set of headphones can be used. But trying to utilize the Zalman mic for multiplayer chat isn't the best option.

Yes, but I've seen too many people here recommend this option to someone just looking for decent headphones and the ability to talk online. For those that don't know much about mics, it's misleading.

Nah, it's just a $10 mic.

As you said, there's not much to be expected.

$10 clip on mic...

I would expect it to sound like a screamo garage band taking a normal computer mic, hanging it from the ceiling and letting loose...

Can you give any details on how you use it and why it's working so well for you?
